For a kid growing up in Springfield, Ill., and rooting for the Cubs, not much for lefthander Ryan O'Malley could beat meeting his idol Ryne Sandberg in spring training. But the 26-year-old O'Malley trumped that thrill on Aug. 16 when he learned he had been promoted from the Triple-A Iowa rotation to Chicago. Because the Cubs had used all available pitchers in an 18-inning game in Houston the night before, they opted to call up O'Malley, who was with Iowa in nearby Round Rock.

One of the best parts of Mike Quade's job as Triple-A Iowa manager is getting to tell young players that they've made it to the major leagues. But Quade himself received a phone call from Cubs general manager Jim Hendry in July. He was being called up to the parent club to take over as the third-base coach while Chris Speier took a leave of absence to tend to personal business.
