There is perhaps no bigger hurdle for a pitcher making the long return from surgery than climbing back onto the mound for the first time, an obstacle righthander Jared Gothreaux cleared March 5. Gothreaux, who went 3-8, 4.29 in 86 innings at Triple-A Round Rock last year before having surgery to repair a tendon in his elbow last August, pitched one inning with a walk in the Astros' 4-3 spring-training loss to the Phillies in Clearwater.
