The Reds were looking for a righthanded hitter who could platoon with Scott Hatteberg at first base and also man the outfield corners. They got their man Thursday in Jeff Conine, who came over from the Phillies in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers, outfielder Javon Moran and third baseman Brad Key.

This was a different kind of Rule 5 pick than the ones that longtime Blue Jays fans remember. The organization had a nice little run with their Rule 5 picks in the 1980s with players like Willie Upshaw, George Bell, Jim Acker, Jim Gott, Kelly Gruber and Manny Lee. Those guys were drafted as young players with potential who became regulars down the line. But in the latest draft at the Winter Meetings, the Blue Jays took an older utility infielder in Jason Smith, 29, from the Cubs.
