The Phillies have agreed to sign 26-year-old Cuban righthander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. The deal is for six years and $48 million, with an $11 million vesting option for a seventh year, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Gonzalez, who is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, sits at 89-94 mph with his fastball as a starter and has touched 96 recently while pitching in short stints in Mexico. Gonzalez also throws a good splitter and changeup that are ahead of his breaking ball, while he’s also recently added a cutter to his arsenal. Projections from several teams range from a mid-rotation starter to a reliever.
