Orioles Add Hardy

The Deal
A couple days after the Orioles traded for third baseman Mark Reynolds, they acquired a new shortstop as well, getting J.J. Hardy from the Twins along with utility infielder Brendan Harris in exchange for a pair of 6-foot-6 righthanders in Jim Hoey and Brett Jacobson.

Twins Acquire
Jim Hoey, rhp
Age: 27.
Born: Dec. 30, 1982 in Trenton.
Ht.: 6-6. Wt.: 200. Bats: R. Throws: R.
School: Rider.
Career Transactions: Selected by Orioles in 13th round of 2003 draft; signed June 11, 2003 … On disabled list, March 30-Sept. 28, 2008.

Norfolk (IL) AAA 4 0 3.38 18 0 0 21.1 11 8 8 0 17 32 1.31

Hoey made it to the big leagues in 2006 and ’07, appearing in 12 and then 23 games. But he got lit up in his brief big league time and has spent most of his seven professional seasons in the minors. Hoey has a plus fastball that sits 91-96 mph with a little bit of sink. He’s able to move his fastball around the strike zone, but he seems best suited for middle relief because of the effort in his delivery and below-average secondary offerings. He throws a short slider and a fringy changeup. Hoey re-introduced a splitter into his repertoire this year.

Brett Jacobson, rhp
Age: 24.
Born: Nov. 9, 1986 in Phoenix.
Ht.: 6-6. Wt.: 205. Bats: R. Throws: R.
School: Vanderbilt.
Career Transactions: Selected by Tigers in 4th round of 2008 draft; signed June 13, 2008 … Traded by Tigers to Orioles for 1B Aubrey Huff, Aug. 15, 2009.

Jacobson was a highly-regarded draft prospect in 2005 out of high school in Arizona, but teams shied away due to a dip in velocity and a strong commitment to Vanderbilt. He was inconsistent in college and tough for scouts to figure out, but he wound up being drafted in the fourth round after his junior year. Jacobson spent his second consecutive year in high Class A in 2010 and throws an average fastball, a 12-to-6 curveball and a changeup. He made a lot of progress this year with his sinker, but needs to stay on top of the pitch more consistently to maintain the quality movement.
