In Baseball America's new Midseason Prospect Update, second baseman and outfielder Mookie Betts ranks as the best prospect in the Red Sox system. Betts was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, and he ranked as the Red Sox’ No. 7 prospect coming into the season. But he finished last year on a high note, batting .341 at high Class A, and continued that surge this season.
Betts opened the season in Double-A and batted .355/.443/.551 in 54 games, earning a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he batted .322/.425/.444 in 23 games. Now at 21 he has already broken through to the major leagues and is getting an opportunity to prove himself in Boston. He was off to a slow start for the Red Sox, batting .235/.278/.382 in 37 at-bats at the all-star break.
