Flush with pitching depth after the trade for Jon Lester as well as Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, the Athletics traded from that depth in sending Tommy Milone to the Twins to bring back speedy, slick-fielding outfielder Sam Fuld.
Fuld stands to at least serve as a defensive replacement for just-acquired Jonny Gomes, if not as a platoon partner with the righthanded hitter.
Tommy Milone, lhp
The Southern California product, acquired by Oakland in the deal that sent Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals, has fringy stuff but has standout command and control, helping him eclipse expectations. He does own an above-average changeup and has no fear throwing it to lefties and righties. He pitched especially well in Oakland (career 2.96 ERA compared with 4.52 away) but is going to a park with similar pitcher-friendly proportions in Target Field. In four major league seasons, Milone is 32-22, 3.84.

The speedy Fuld was designated for assignment by the A’s in early April and claimed on waivers by the Twins on April 20. The speedy Stanford product has sporadically been an effective major league hitter, but his main value to a team has been as a stalwart on defense and an excellent baserunner. He likely will serve as go-to fourth outfielder in his return to Oakland. He doesn’t fit perfectly in a platoon with Gomes as he’s better against lefthanders in his career.
