A big-bodied first baseman with plus raw power, Charles logged parts of three seasons with Rookie-level Bluefield, batting .240/.371/.478 with 21 homers in 136 games. He led the Appalachian League with 61 RBIs in 2011, while also leading the circuit with 89 strikeouts. To that last point, Charles has struck out in roughly 30 percent of his plate appearances as a professional, all in short-season ball, making him a long shot to hit for average.

|Michael Schwimer, rhp
Age: 27. Born: Feb 19, 1986 in Fairfax, Va.
Ht.: 6-8. Wt.: 240.
Bats: R. Throws: R.
Career Transactions: Selected by Phillies in 14th round of 2008 draft; signed June 11, 2008.
Schwimer’s track record in Triple-A suggests that he can be a useful bullpen piece at the major league level, perhaps in middle relief. In three seasons with Lehigh Valley, he logged a 1.11 WHIP over 78 appearances, posting ratios of 10.4 strikeouts, 2.9 walks and 7.1 hits per nine innings. Schwimer has continued to miss bats in the big leagues (9.6 SO/9), though trouble with baserunners (1.40 WHIP) and lefthanded batters (.891 OPS) have cut into his effectiveness. He throws a sinker that tops out near 93 mph while leaning on a mid-80s slider he throws more than 40 percent of the time.
