Jered Weaver, two years removed from being named Baseball America's College Player of the Year at Long Beach State, became the first pitcher since Livan Hernandez in 1997 to win his first nine career decisions, posting a 1.95 ERA overall. With the Royals moving prospect Justin Huber to the outfield at Triple-A Omaha and Kila Kaaihue struggling this season at Double-A Wichita, the Royals' cupboard was bare for first base prospects in the high minors. They addressed that by acquiring Ryan Shealy, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound power-hitting first baseman, in a four-player trade with the Rockies.

On the plus side, the former Miami standout made a strong showing with the bat at low Class A Greensboro, where South Atlantic League managers named him the player with the best strike zone judgment in the annual Best Tools survey.
