After dominating Australia’s under-18 national tournament last month, 18-year-old first baseman Jack Barrie has signed with the Twins.
At 6-foot-4, 253 pounds, Barrie is an extra-large first baseman with plus power from the right side of the plate, and scouts have seen him make remarkable progress over the past year. At the Major League Baseball Australian Academy last summer, Barrie struggled, going just 8-for-53 (.151) with a double, five walks and 14 strikeouts. At the time, Barrie was coming off a broken wrist and was showing impressive raw power but struggled in games.
When Australia held its national championships for the under 18 division in January, Barrie was the tournament’s most dominant hitter, batting .636/.652/1.136 in 11 games by going 26-for-44 with six doubles, two triples, four home runs two walks and four strikeouts, with loud contact even on his outs. He led the tournament in batting average, slugging, hits, doubles and homers and ranked fourth in on-base percentage.
