The top Cuban free agent on the market will be available for all 30 teams to see by the end of the month.
Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, who is currently in Florida, will hold an open showcase for teams on July 26 at the University of Miami. Castillo, who is represented by Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports, is a free agent and is expected to sign fairly soon after his showcase, making him a potential impact player down the stretch if he signs with a contending club.
Since Castillo started training in the Dominican Republic, sources say he appears to have added about 20 pounds and is now around 5-foot-9, 205 pounds. Castillo is an excellent athlete, a plus-plus runner and was one of the better basestealers in Cuba, with a line-drive stroke from the right side and surprising power for his size. Some scouts see Castillo as an everyday center fielder, though others view him as a fourth outfielder. Castillo played for the Cuban national team, with his best performance coming at the World Cup in Panama three years ago, when he led the tournament in batting average and slugging by hitting .512/.524/.854 in 10 games. Castillo turns 27 on Wednesday, so he should be in the prime years of his career.
We have new footage of Castillo taking batting practice last month, which you can see below, as well as a highlight reel clip from before he left Cuba.
