Rosters For WBC Qualifier In Brooklyn

Israel, Pakistan, Great Britain, Brazil

Below are the rosters for the World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament, set for Sept. 22-25 at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. Israel, Pakistan, Great Britain and Brazil are the teams competing to qualify for the WBC in 2017, which is set to begin March 7.

Israel, managed by Rockies development official Jerry Weinstein, features veteran infielders Ike Davis and Josh Satin, pitchers Jason Marquis and Craig Breslow and outfielder Cody Decker. Among the minor leaguers are Diamondbacks outfielder Zach Borenstein, who twice ranked in the Prospect Handbook, in 2013 with the Angels (No. 9) and 2014 with the Diamondbacks (No. 26); Nationals outfielder Rhett Wiseman, the organization’s No. 21 prospect entering the season, a lefty hitter with average raw power; Brad Goldberg, the former Ohio State righthanded starter now a reliever for the White Sox; 2005 supplemental pick Tyler Herron, who ranked four times in the Cardinals’ Top 30 (2006-09) and now at 29 is at Double-A Binghamton (Mets); 2015 27th-rounder Alex Katz, who has averaged more than a strikeout per inning at low Class A and high Class A for the White Sox; Dodgers’ 14th-round pick Dean Kremer, a righthander from UNLV averaging 12.5 strikeouts per nine for low Class A Great Lakes, and shortstop Scotty Burcham, drafted by the Rockies in the 25th round out of Sacramento State in 2015.

Brazil is led by Barry Larkin, who returns as manager, with LaTroy Hawkins as pitching coach and Steve Finley as hitting coach. Players include Christian Lopes, who twice ranked in the Blue Jays’ Top 30 in the Prospect Handbook (No. 29 after 2011, and No. 23 after 2012); Timmy Lopes, who was the No. 25 prospect after the 2012 season for the Mariners and No. 24 after 2013; righthander Andre Rienzo, who three times ranked among the White Sox’s top prospects, reaching as high as No. 7 after 2012; 20-year-old catcher Luis Paz has an .896 OPS for Rookie-level Ogden, and Mariners righthander Thyago Vieira is averaging 10.6 strikeouts per nine at high Class A Bakersfield.

Liam Carroll will manage Great Britain, which has 12 players on its roster in affiliated ball. Most notable are Marlins lefthander Chris Reed, the 16th overall pick in 2011 by the Dodgers who is 3-4, 3.78 at Triple-A New Orleans; Rangers lefthander Michael Roth, who ranked as the No. 30 prospect with the Angels after 2012; Marlins righthander Jake Esch, their No. 13 prospect entering the season; 18-year-old Diamondbacks shortstop Jasrado Chisholm, who has posted an .831 OPS in the offense-inducing Pioneer League; Indians outfielder Todd Isaacs, who would be among the New York-Penn League leaders in batting and OPS if he had the requisite at-bats and Mets outfielder Champ Stuart, who ranked No. 23 in the organization after 2014.

Pakistan is making its first appearance in the WBC and has no players in affiliated ball. Pervaiz Shah Khawar, who helped establish baseball in the country through the Pakistan Baseball Federation, will manage the club.
