The Rays have signed 16-year-old Venezuelan lefthander Francisco Sanchez for $675,000. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Sanchez has flashed swing-and-miss stuff, with a fastball that has touched 94 along with a curveball and a changeup. He will have to learn to repeat his delivery to get the ball in the strike zone more often, although his athleticism should help him there. Sanchez trained with Jorge Cortez.
The Rays acquired three international bonus slots from the Marlins to bump their pool from $1,998,1000 to $2,982,150, but they have already gone over their 2014-15 international bonus pool, which means every signing will cost them an extra 100 percent in overage taxes, along with prohibiting them from signing any player for more than $300,000 the next two signing periods. In addition to Sanchez, the Rays have come away with Dominican shortstop Adrian Rondon, the No. 1 international prospect for July 2 for $2.95 million, and Dominican outfielder Jesus Sanchez, who signed for $400,000 as the No. 27 prospect for July 2.
