The Pirates signed Dominican outfielder Yondry Contreras for $400,000. Contreras’ mom was a softball player on the Dominican national team and the athleticism is evident on Contreras’ tools. He has good strength in his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame with average speed and good arm strength. He’s a righthanded hitter with quick hands at the plate and is learning to take better control of the strike zone, but he makes hard contact when he connects. Contreras played in the Dominican Prospect League and trained with William Valdez.
