Italian shortstop Marten Gasparini, the No. 12 international prospect for July 2, has signed with the Royals for $1.3 million, a record for a European amateur player.
Some scouts consider Gasparini, 16, the best prospect to ever come out of Europe at his age. At 6 feet, 175 pounds, Gasparini is one of the best athletes on the international market, has excellent speed and should play a premium position, with a lot of scouts projecting him as a center fielder. He’s a switch-hitter who performed well at the 15U World Championship last August in Mexico. Our feature on Gasparini from May has more details on his background and skill set.
