The Mariners have signed 16-year-old Dominican catcher Ismerlin Mota for $295,000. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Mota has a strong build with advanced catch-and-throw skills and instincts for his age, with a solid offensive approach from the right side of the plate. Mota played in the Dominican Prospect League and trained with Josue Mateo.

The Dominican Republic isn’t known for producing catchers, although Mariners Dominican catcher Onil Pena, who signed last year on July 2 for $385,000 (Seattle’s No. 2 bonus of 2013), has hit .337/.371/.490 in 23 games in the Dominican Summer League as a 17-year-old.
