Nationals Sign Dominican Shortstop Bryan Bencosme

Bryan Bencosme, a 16-year-old Dominican shortstop, has signed with the Nationals for $400,000. At 6-foot-1, 160 pounds, Bencosme has been inconsistent at the plate but he’s shown some teams the ability to barrel up good fastballs from the right side with strong hands and doubles power. Some scouts liked his defense at shortstop, but others felt he would outgrow the position and move to second or third base, with the arm to play on the left side of the infield. Bencosme played in the Dominican Prospect League and trained with Josue Guerrero.
