An effort to get baseball back into the Olympics took a small step forward today when the International Olympic Committee announced that the combined package of baseball and softball will be proposed for possible inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.
Wrestling and squash are also up for consideration when the IOC meets in Buenos Aires, Argentina from Sept. 7-10 to vote on which of the three sports to add to the 2020 Olympics. Karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu did not make the cut.
“We are extremely appreciative of the support we have received for the combined efforts of baseball and softball to return to the Olympic program in 2020,” said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball’s executive director and CEO. “While today rewards the hard work and support of many in the baseball and softball community, we must continue this process with earnest for the next four months as we look towards the International Olympic Committee’s final decision in Buenos Aires.”
