The Astros have signed 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Frankenny Fernandez.
A righthanded hitter, Fernandez is 6 feet, 170 pounds and stands out more in games than in showcases with solid tools across the board. Scouts highest on him have seen him perform well against live pitching and project him to play an up-the-middle position. Fernandez trains with Victor Baez.
Earlier today the Astros also signed 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Felix Lucas. They have been busy since the 2013-14 signing period opened on July 2, adding Dominican shortstop Joan Mauricio, Venezuelan outfielder Nestor Tejada, Venezuelan shortstop/catcher Jonathan Matute and Dominican shortstop/center fielder Osvaldo Duarte. They also traded $784,700 in pool space to the Cubs to acquire second baseman Ronald Torreyes.
