The Mariners have officially signed Venezuelan outfielder Brayan Hernandez, the No. 3 international prospect for July 2, for $1.85 million.
Hernandez, a 16-year-old switch-hitter, is the top prospect this year out of Venezuela, and his bonus is also the highest among Venezuelans, edging No. 4 international prospect Anderson Espinoza, a righthander who signed with Boston for $1.8 million.
At 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Hernandez an athletic center fielder with a well-rounded skill set and performed well at the MLB showcase in the Dominican Republic in January, when he went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and a walk. Hernandez trained with Henderson Martinez.
