The Yankees have signed 16-year-old Venezuelan outfielder Jonathan Amundaray, the No. 22 international prospect for July 2, for $1.5 million. His deal also includes $120,000 for college scholarship money, which will not count against the Yankees pool (not that it really matters to the Yankees this year).
A righthanded hitter, Amundaray is a physical presence at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds and projects to be a big, physical corner outfielder. He’s a good athlete for his size, which should help him make adjustments for his game skills to catch up to his raw tools. Amundaray, who also spent time in the Dominican Republic showcasing in the International Prospect League, trained with Dennys Suarez.
