July 8: Mariners Sign Venezuelan Shortstop Luis Rengifo

The Mariners have signed Venezuelan shortstop Luis Rengifo, a 16-year-old switch-hitter who impressed scouts with his bat control and performance against live pitching. He’s 5-foot-10, 165 pounds with good hands and speed that kept improving as July 2 approached. Rengifo trains with Henderson Martinez. The Mariners have already signed Greifer Andrade (an outfielder who will become a shortstop) out of Venezuela, as well as Dominican catcher Onil Pena and Dominican outfielder Ronald Rosario.

Baseball America subscribers can access more information on Rengifo, along with reports on more than 70 international prospects on the market.

July 5: Braves Sign Shortstop Ozhaino Albies From Curacao

The Braves have signed Ozhaino Albies, a switch-hitting shortstop from Curacao. Albies is small in stature at 5-foot-7, 135 pounds, but he’s already a plus runner who plays above his raw tools. His size will probably limit his power, but he has good baseball instincts. Some scouts like him best at second base.

The Padres have a deal with Dominican righthander Mayky Perez for a $634,000 bonus.

Subscribers can read a scouting report on Perez ($).

July 5: Rays Sign Dominican Shortstop Carlos Guzman

The Rays have signed 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Carlos Guzman. At 6-foot-1, 155 pounds, Guzman has a skinny frame, good actions and projects to stick at shortstop. He has a quick swing and a line-drive approach from the right side. He is from San Pedro de Macoris but is not related to the trainer of the same name from that region. Guzman trained with William Santo, whose nickname is “El Loco.”

July 5: Red Sox Sign Venezuelan Lefthander Enmanuel DeJesus

The Red Sox have signed Enmanuel DeJesus, a 16-year-old Venezuelan lefthander. DeJesus offers physical projection from his 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame. He throws a mid- to high-80s fastball with inconsistent secondary pitches. He trains with Luis Blasini and has some similarities to lefthander Felix Doubront, who signed with the Red Sox 10 years ago out of Blasini’s program.

Subscribers can read more information on DeJesus ($).

July 5: Red Sox Sign Venezuelan Lefthander Jhonathan Diaz

The Red Sox have signed Jhonathan Diaz, a 16-year-old Venezuelan lefthander. Diaz is 6 feet, 175 pounds with a fastball up to 88 mph and good pitchability. He’s a good athlete, to the point where he can throw almost as hard righthanded as he does lefthanded. Diaz trains with Julio Torres.

Subscribers can read more information on Diaz ($).

July 5: Giants Sign Venezuelan Outfielder Mikey Edie

Venezuelan outfielder Mikey Edie has signed with the Giants. Edie, 16, played in the 2009 Little League World Series and at the 15U World Championship in Mexico last August. At 6 feet, 165 pounds, Edie stands out for his excellent speed and athleticism, although his bat and baseball instincts are still raw. Edie trains at Carlos Guillen’s academy.

Subscribers can read more information on Edie ($).

July 4: Rays Sign Dominican Shortstop Juan Santos

The Rays have signed Dominican shortstop Juan Santos for $240,000. Santos, 16, has an athletic 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame with a plus arm and projectable righthanded power once he fills out his long, lanky build. Santos played in the International Prospect League.

July 4: Dodgers Sign Venezuelan Righthander Alvaro Trillo

The Dodgers have signed Venezuelan righthander Alvaro Trillo for $200,000. Trillo, 16, is 6-foot-1, 175 pounds with a loose arm and a fastball up to 91 mph. His curveball already gets up to the high-70s with good break, so he could have two above-average pitches between his fastball and his curveball. He has shown some feel for changeup as well with good pitchability for his age. Trillo trains with Rafael Betancourt.

July 4: Pirates Sign Dominican Outfielder Edinson Lantigua

The Pirates have signed Dominican outfielder Edinson Lantigua for $275,000. Lantigua, 16, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds and scouts highest on him believe his best tool is his bat. He’s a lefty with gap power. He trains with Joan Cid and played in the Dominican Prospect League.

July 4: Dodgers Sign Venezuelan Outfielder Daniel Padilla

The Dodgers have signed Venezuelan outfielder Daniel Padilla for $200,000. Padilla, 16, is 6-foot-3, 185 pounds with good athleticism, excellent speed and a strong arm from center field. With his size and wheels, he offers an intriguing combination of speed and power potential from the right side of the plate. Padilla trained with Dennys Suarez.

July 4: Rangers Sign Mexican Righthander Edgar Arredondo

The Rangers have signed Mexican righthander Edgar Arredondo from Quintana Roo of the Mexican League. Arredondo, 16, is 6-fot-3, 190 pounds with a fastball up to 91 mph and a changeup that’s ahead of his curveball.

Subscribers can read more information on Arredondo ($).

July 3: Dodgers Agree To Sign Dominican Shortstop Lucas Tirado

Dominican shortstop Lucas Tirado has agreed to sign with the Dodgers for $1 million. Tirado, 16, is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and shows a short swing from the left side during batting practice, although his game performance has been uneven. He’s a below-average runner and doesn’t have a standout tool, which means a position change is likely in his future.

Subscribers can read more information on Tirado ($).

July 3: Pirates Agree To Terms With Dominican Shortstop Adrian Valerio

Dominican shortstop Adrian Valerio has agreed to terms with the Pirates for $400,000. Valerio, 16, is one of the best defensive shortstops in Latin America with smooth actions and good awareness in the field. At 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, he has a simple, line-drive stroke from both sides of the plate. Valerio played in the Dominican Prospect League.

Subscribers can read more information on Valerio ($).

July 3: Mariners Sign No. 21 International Prospect Greifer Andrade

The Mariners have signed 16-year-old Greifer Andrade out of Venezuela. While Andrade showcased for teams as an outfielder and played there at the 15U World Championship in Mexico last August, he will begin his career at shortstop. He will likely end up at third base, which he has played in the past, so the position change makes him a more intriguing prospect.

Subscribers can read a scouting report on Andrade ($).

July 3: Giants Sign Dominican Shortstop Kelvin Beltre

The Giants have signed Dominican shortstop Kelvin Beltre for $650,000. Beltre, 16, is 6 feet, 170 pounds, shows good righthanded bat speed and plays with a lot of energy. Subscribers can read a scouting report on Beltre ($).

July 3: Red Sox Sign Dominican Outfielder Yohan Aybar

Dominican outfielder Yohan Aybar, who turned 16 today, signed with the Red Sox for $450,000. Aybar is a lefty with a skinny, projectable frame (6-foot-1, 150 pounds) and his best tool is his above-average arm. He’s around an average runner and he could stick in center field depending on what happens to his speed, otherwise he has plenty of arm strength for right field. His bat is still raw, but his athleticism and physical projection make him intriguing. Aybar trained with Juan Herrera (known as “Mon”) and played in the International Prospect League.

Subscribers can read a scouting report on Aybar ($).

His righthanded swing is unorthodox but he projects to have defensive value sticking behind the plate. He played in the Dominican Prospect League and trained with Fausto “Chiki” Mejia. Here’s some video of Lorenzo. After blowing past their 2012-13 bonus pool, the Rays are not allowed to sign a player for more than $250,000 during the current signing period.
