The regular season has wrapped up in Florida so the district playoffs start this week. Meanwhile, teams up north are only three weeks into their seasons. I’m on the road this week to see a few players in the Mid-Atlantic so be sure to follow me on Twitter (@NathanRode). Here’s a few highlights from the last week in the high school world…
• Lefthander Justus Sheffield is Tullahoma (Tenn.) High’s ace now with his older brother Jordan having Tommy John surgery. Justus, a junior, has pitched well this season and added a no-hitter to the stat sheet.
• Jesuit High (Tampa) dropped its first game of the season on April 13 to Seminole (Fla.) High before having to turn around and face No. 3 Venice (Fla.) High. The Tigers dropped that contest 3-0 to finish at 22-2 in the regular season.
• No. 8 Loganville (Ga.) High and No. 10 Gainesville (Ga.) High played each other twice in the last two weeks with the Red Elephants coming out on top in both games. They won the first matchup 5-3 on April 12 and completed the sweep of Loganville with a 3-2 win on April 15.
• No. 1 Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) avoided a big upset with comeback win in extra innings against Santa Margarita Catholic High (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). Down 1-0 in the ninth, the Monarchs got a two-out single from Brian Soper that scored Jeremy Martinez. Soper then stole second and came around to score on a ground ball by Davis Tominaga that was mishandled.
