Just six days after dog piling in Cary, N.C., with a National High School Invitational titile, Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) claimed another tournament crown. The Monarchs defeated Oaks Christian High (Westlake Village, Calif.) 6-0 to win the southern bracket of the inaugural Boras Baseball Classic.
Lefthander Jacob Erickson, who pitched a shutout against Harvard-Westlake High (Studio City, Calif.) in the NHSI final, got the start again for Mater Dei and went the distance, striking out 12 and allowing six hits. The Monarchs got on the board early, scoring five runs in the first. Freshman outfielder Josh Stephen provided the big blow with a three-run double.
Mater Dei was No. 5 in the High School Top 25 before the NHSI and stands to slide into the top spot with a 14-1 record and back-to-back tournament titles.
In 2012, the Monarchs lost their first game after returning from an NHSI championship and ultimately fell short of a Southern Section title that would have also netted a national one. They are clearly in the driver’s seat, but nothing is guaranteed in Southern California. They will now face Pleasant Grove High (Elk Grove, Calif.)—the northern bracket winner—on April 13 at University of Pacific.
