High School Top 25: May 21

Upsets wreaked havoc across the high school baseball landscape the last two weeks, bringing a lot of movement in the latest Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25. Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) fell from No. 1 after losing in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs. That opened the door for Harvard-Westlake High (Studio City, Calif.) to take over the top spot. Venice (Fla.) High moved up to No. 2 after claiming a second consecutive 7-A title in Florida. The only thing between the Indians and finishing at No. 1 is Harvard-Westlake’s fate in the postseason.

No. 6 Owasso (Okla.) High, No. 9 Lexington (S.C.) high, No. 13 Coronado High (Henderson, Nev.), No. 15 Desert Mountain High (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and No. 16 Lake Brantley High (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) all finished the season with championship wins in their respective states.

Five of the top 10 teams from the last ranking dropped out after failing to reach the semifinals in the state playoffs—No. 4 American Heritage High (Plantation, Fla.), No. 6 Gainesville (Ga.) High, No. 8 Barbe High (Lake Charles, La.), No. 9 Klein High (Spring, Texas) and No. 10 Loganville (Ga.) High.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are as of May 19 and do not include ties.
