High School Top 25: March 17

Despite losing its season opener, Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman High barely hung on to the top spot. Senior lefthander Joey Rickard made the start and gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Rickard struck out nine, walked two and allowed just three hits, but senior righthander Stephen Manthei gave up two runs in the seventh inning as Silverado won 4-2. The Gaels defense didn’t help much as they committed three errors. Senior first baseman Jeff Malm led Bishop Gorman in hitting by going 1-for-3 with a triple and RBI. Bellaire (Texas) High poses the biggest threat to Bishop Gorman as the Cardinals jumped to No. 2 after a 10-0 start.

Coppell (Texas) High wasn’t the furtherst to fall—Park Vista High of Lake Worth, Fla. dropped from the No. 3 spot—but the Cowboys were arguably the most disappointing, starting the season 7-6 with a lineup that has six Division I signees and three players in the Baseball America High School Top 100.

Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) catapulted into the Top 25 after starting 5-0 and taking down preseason No. 22 Capistrano Valley (Calif.) High in the process.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. The final poll will be released June 9 and will expand to 50 teams. Records indicated are as of March 15 and do not include ties.
