The first in-season poll of the year brought a new team into the No. 1 spot in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association High School Top 25, sponsored by TeamSnap.
St. Francis High (Mountain View, Calif.), which landed at No. 2 in the preseason poll, ascended to the top spot after opening the season 3-0. Preseason No. 1 Venice (Fla.) High lost to Lakewood Ranch High (Sarasota, Fla.) and dropped to the second spot despite an overall strong start when it has outscored its opponents by 45 runs in eight games and defeated one of the top teams on its schedule in Tampa Jesuit.
The early-season ranking underscores the diversity of high school schedules around the country, and those issues have been exacerbated with the unseasonably cold and snowy winter across much of the nation. Six ranked teams have yet to play a regular season game, while a handful of teams from warm-weather locales have already played more than 10.
With a 10-0 start to the season, Buchanan High (Clovis, Calif.) jumped to No. 16 after opening the season unranked. The Bears have a history of success under coach Tom Donald, the father of Royals infielder Jason Donald. The team is led by explosive outfielder Trenton Kemp, one of the top high school athletes in the draft, and a pair of Area Code Games participants, infielder/pitcher Michael Bono, who has touched 92 mph, and middle infielder Korby Batesole.
Whitehouse (Texas) High, which returned seven starters from a team that advanced to the state semifinals last year, came into the poll at No. 24 with an 11-0 start. Strong-bodied outfielder/righthander Pat Mahomes, a Texas Tech commitment who has touched 92 mph and has raw power, is the Wildcats’ top draft prospect.
Two Southeast teams that will participate in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational later this month fell from the rankings. Milton (Ga.) High, which was ranked fifth in the preseason and has hard-throwing righthander Dylan Cease, is off to a 4-3 start. Coral Springs (Fla.) Christian Academy, the No. 25 preseason team, also dropped from the rankings.
No team ranked in the preseason jumped more spots than Walton High (Marietta, Ga.), who moved from No. 10 to No. 16.
The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are as of March 9 and do not include ties.
