Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) High reclaimed the top spot in the Baseball America/Baseball Coaches Association Top 25 after falling to No. 3 in the previous ranking. Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) High’s first loss of the season dropped them from No. 1 to No. 4 and created the opening for McCarthy to regain the top spot in the country.

McCarthy’s sole loss of the season is to South Hills (West Covina, Calif.) in the National High School Invitational. South Hills is an extremely deep team that has been among the top six in the last two rankings.

Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High, the 2017 NHSI champions, had the biggest drop after being swept in three games by St. John’s Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) High. Orange Lutheran fell from No. 2 to 23rd. Orange Lutheran’s performance in the nation’s premiere high school tournament keeps them in the Top 25 this week, but it’ll need a strong performance over the next two to avoid dropping out. St. John’s Bosco, meanwhile, enters at No. 19.

The Southern Region’s top three teams had an impressive past few weeks, as No. 3 Shawnee (Okla.) High, No. 5 George Ranch (Richmond, Texas) High and No. 7 West Monroe (La.) High didn’t drop a single game and each moved into the top 10.

The top 25 teams are selected through a poll of representatives from the Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) and Baseball America. All records are as of April 16.
