USA Baseball Announces NTIS Selections

Through the 2013 National Team Identification Series, USA Baseball selected 51 players for the 2014 National Team Trials and 2014 National Team Development Programs.

The NTIS, which was held over two weekends, included more than 1,000 players from across the country, spanning five age groups. At the highest level, USA Baseball selected eight players for the 2014 18-and-under National team trials as it tries to win its third consecutive World Cup gold medal, which would be its first three-peat and the first since Cuba won four consecutive titles from 1984-1987.

The 2012 NTIS paid dividends for the 2013 gold medal-winning squad as it identified three vital cogs, starting shortstop Cole Tucker, lefthander Mac Marshall and righthander Luis Ortiz, who won the World Cup MVP and pitched the final two innings of the 3-2 championship game victory over Japan. The NTIS reaches to some lower age groups, and two years ago identified two talented 15-year-olds that were also key contributors to this year’s 18U team, righthander Joe DeMers, who tossed seven scoreless innings in Taiwan, and catcher/outfielder Jakson Reetz, who hit .435/.533/.739 and led the team with four doubles and a home run.

USA Baseball also selected eight players for the 2014 17U National Team Development Program, 16 players to the 2014 15U National Team Trials, 16 players to the 2014 12U National Team Trials and three players for the 2014 Women’s National Team Trials.
