A Look Through The Archives Of Top Jupiter Rosters

With this year’s Jupiter in the rear-view mirror, looking back throughout the history of the Perfect Game WWBA World Championship at previous rosters provides historical context about the accumulation of talent at the most heavily scouted showcase of the year. As some travel programs and scout teams have built strong reputations, the top pro talent has become more concentrated among the premier teams. We went through many of the Jupiter rosters from 2007-2010 and picked a team from each year that had a disproportionate number of future pro players. 2010 was selected as the cutoff because the players in the 2011 draft class who went to college will be draft-eligible this June, after three years in school.

The charts below list every player drafted on the teams, not every player who attended the event. Each player’s name is followed by position, draft year, draft round and bonus. Unsigned players who were not selected again are italicized. Each team’s record is found in the parentheses to the right of its name.

Disclaimer: A complicating factor is that not every player listed on the rosters played in the event, as players sometimes drop the event last-minute because of an injury or other factors.

First or supplemental first-round picks: 8

This was the only roster to have two No. 1 picks in the draft, Bryce Harper (2010) and Mark Appel (2013). This roster also had six pitchers who were selected in the first or supplemental first round. Righthander Chandler Shepherd, who went unsigned in 2011 out of high school, enters his junior year at Kentucky with a chance to go in the top 10 rounds. After pitching mostly out of the bullpen as a sophomore, Shepherd could move into the rotation and has a fastball that has been up to 92 mph to go with multiple offspeed offerings that could be average or better.

Result: Lost 1-0 in the semifinals

First or supplemental first-round picks: 9

Top 10 round picks: 13

Total signing bonus money: $17,785,000

Future Pro Players: 16

After this year, the 2010 FTB Mizuno club will likely have more pro players as some of its players pass through the class ranks and are draft-eligible again. Three current college players, outfielder Dominic Jose, righthander Brad Labozzetta and two-way Justin Shafer, have strong chances of being drafted. The switch-hitting outfielder Jose, a Stanford junior, has the tools to become a top-five round pick next June. Shafer, a junior outfielder and righthanded pitcher, hit .300/.345/.448 for Florida and shows potential on the mound. Labozzetta, who was up to 92 mph in high school, redshirted his freshman 2013 season at Florida Gulf Coast because of Tommy John surgery.
