The Cardinals had five picks before the second round and have signed their first player from that group. St. Mary's third baseman Patrick Wisdom agreed to a $678,790 bonus.
Wisdom struggled this spring but hit well as a sophomore and in the Alaska League last summer. His proponents believe he can be a solid hitter with plus power while playing strong defense at third base.
Wisdom was the 52nd overall selection. The assigned value for that pick was $969,700.
Note: The original version of this blog post contained erroneous bonus information that since has been corrected.
