Bumgarner Ends Career With Championship

South Caldwell High (Hudson, N.C.) senior lefty Madison Bumgarner hit a walk-off, inside-the-park home run in his final high school at-bat, capping a 10-0 win in the second game of a best-of-three North Carolina 4-A championship series against Wilmington’s Ashley High.

Bumgarner, one of eight high school pitchers expected to be drafted in the first round this Thursday, pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts to pace South Caldwell’s 4-1 win in the series opener Friday, his 35th career victory. His athleticism is one of his best assets, which was illustrated Saturday when he hit his 11th home run of the season–a line drive off the center field wall at Five County Stadium, the Double-A home of the Carolina Mudcats. When the center fielder fell down, Bumgarner raced home to end the game, and his prep career.
