Tim Beckham said he knew it was between he and Florida State catcher Buster Posey for the first overall pick. Now that the Rays picked him, Beckham said he expects to ascend to the majors quickly.
"Hopefully two to three years (in the minors)," Beckham said. "The quicker the better for me. I’m going to keep working hard and go 110 percent in everything I do."
Beckham said he admires Rays center fielder B.J. Upton, who the Rays drafted as a high school shortstop in 2002 with the second overall pick. Upton ultimately converted to center field, and while Beckham projects to stay at shortstop, he said he would be open to anything the Rays ask of him.
"I’ll do whatever they tell me to do," Beckham said. "Whatever wins a world championship."
