2013 State Draft Report: Dakotas

North Dakota and South Dakota don’t usually have any early-round picks—and this year is no exception—but they do have a few senior signs who could get drafted.

THIS YEAR’S CROP
***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

The best prospect in the area is South Dakota State righthander Layne Somsen, a fifth-year senior with a 90-92 mph fastball. He nearly authored an upset of Oregon in the first round of the NCAA regional playoffs, one-hitting the Ducks for seven innings.

Sioux Falls, S.D., high schools have two Big 12 Conference recruits in righthanders Jon Hander (who also will try to walk on in football at Kansas) and Ethan Landon (Kansas State).
