2013 State Draft Report: Colorado

There’s something about pitchers from Colorado. This year as in most years, plenty of pitchers from the Centennial State dot major league rosters, including Roy Halladay, Brandon McCarthy, Luke Hochevar, Sergio Romo, Mark Melancon and Kevin Gausman. Looking back over history, the list of big league pitchers out of the state also includes Goose Gossage, Brad Lidge, Danny Jackson, Jay Howell, Scott Elarton, Doug Brocail, Shawn Chacon, David Pauley and Tippy Martinez.

THIS YEAR’S CROP
***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

Because pitching in Colorado doesn’t give players as much experience or exposure as those from other states, many of the top high school prospects will end up in college. And because Colorado has just two NCAA Division I programs, Air Force and Northern Colorado, many of these pitchers will head out of state for college. Of the six players listed above, for example, only one (Halladay) signed out of a Colorado high school. Gausman, Hochevar and Melancon all attended Division I schools out of state, while McCarthy and Romo went to small colleges in Colorado.

So it’s fitting that the top pitcher in the state this year is a pitcher who will probably go to college rather than signing a pro contract. Righthander Alec Hansen experienced arm soreness late in the year, which made his draft prospects harder to project. No structural damage was found, but that along with his parents’ emphasis on education, may mean he winds up at Oklahoma, where one scout predicted he could throw 100 mph in time.
