2013 Draft State Report: New York

After an epic year that saw 41 players drafted out of New York, it’s back to reality for the Empire State.

THIS YEAR’S CROP
***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

Weather wreaked havoc on high school schedules, players disappointed and the college programs have complementary players rather than stars. Stephen Alemais’ move to Elev8 Academy in Boca Raton, Fla., also was a slight hit to talent pool.

Righthander Jesse Roth has a projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds and has good arm strength. He is committed to Virginia. Dylan Manwaring is the son of former major leaguer Kirt and has good strength. Justin Topa looked like an early round prospect last summer after recovering from 2011 Tommy John surgery, but his stuff was inconsistent this spring. The righthander sat in the low 90s last summer in the Northwoods League, where he ranked as the No. 7 prospect, and topped out at 95, but didn’t show that form this spring.
