2013 Draft State Report: Mississippi

The Magnolia State has the makings of a big year at the top of the draft, and has one of the strongest contingents of junior college players in the country. The state could provide the first two middle infielders from the college ranks in Tim Anderson and Adam Frazier, who couldn’t be much more different. Anderson is a toolsy potential first-rounder at a junior college, while Frazier is a polished college middle infielder who doesn’t have a true plus tool.

THIS YEAR’S CROP
***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

The state’s track record for high school players holds back some of this year’s draft class, which falls off quickly after righthander Mike Mayers of Ole Miss. The Rebels started the year 21-2 but went 17-22 down the stretch, while their rivals, Mississippi State, won a regioal and advanced to super regional play.

Next years’s draft class in the state should be stout, as Southern Mississippi’s sophomore class grows up and Bulldogs closer Jonathan Holder becomes draft-eligible.
