UNC Asheville has hired Boston College assistant coach Scott Friedholm as its new head coach, replacing the retired Tom Smith.
"I am very excited to be the next head baseball coach at UNC Asheville," Friedholm said in a statement. "This is an outstanding academic institution with a baseball program that has a great deal of potential. I can't wait to get to Asheville and get started.”
Friedholm has also been the pitching coach at the Naval Academy and Maine. He played four seasons at Providence (1995-98) and was an All-American as a senior when he hit .395 with 13 homers and 66 RBIs.
After his senior year, Friedholm signed as an undrafted free agent with the Rays and played one season in the Florida State League.
Smith stepped down after compiling an 86-177 record in five seasons.
