With seven weekends in the books and seven to go before Selection Monday, we have reached the midpoint of college baseball’s regular season. In lieu of our standard Weekend Preview, [...]
Anyone who has seen Carlos Rodon pitch will tell you the first thing that stands out about the southpaw—perhaps other than his blazing fastball—is his fierce competitiveness on the mound.
College baseball lacked an individual performance for the ages in 2012—the kind of seasons Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey and Trevor Bauer had as juniors. Considering the demands of his defensive position, his leadership value and his power production, Florida catcher Mike Zunino had the best all-around season, earning him our College Player of the Year award.
Few players have had more of an impact on college baseball over the last three years than Florida catcher Mike Zunino, our 2012 College Player of the Year.
The 2011 college class was the type that comes around maybe once a decade. It was loaded with quality pitchers, starting with the first three picks in the draft (Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen, Trevor Bauer) and a total of 11 first-rounders. In four years at the helm, Kevin O'Sullivan has transformed the Gators into a college baseball powerhouse. After missing regionals in 2006 and '07, Florida exceeded expectations to make a regional in O'Sullivan's first season in 2008. The next year, the Gators won a regional. The year after that, they made it to Omaha. And this year, they earned a preseason No. 1 ranking, ended the regular season atop the rankings and advanced all the way to the CWS Finals. For constructing a model program with a rock-solid foundation, O'Sullivan is Baseball America's College Coach of the Year.

Like Ackley, Moran is a gifted lefthanded hitter who went to North Carolina and earned a starting job immediately as a corner infielder. And like Ackley, Moran became Baseball America's Freshman of the Year.
