CORAL GABLES, Fla.–From Orlando (draft) to Jupiter (high school showcase) to Coral Gables, BA is now on the University of Miami’s campus for Game Two of the super-regional matchup between the Hurricanes and the Arizona Wildcats. The nation’s No. 1 team lost last night in eleven innings and is now on the brink of elimination. Arizona has not been to the College World Series since 2004 but can punch its ticket to Omaha with a win tonight.
Between the two schools, last night’s game featured four players that were drafted in the first round of Thursday’s draft: Yonder Alonso (seven overall), Jemile Weeks (12), Ryan Perry (21) and Carlos Gutierrez (27). The Wildcats leaned heavily on their first-rounder yesterday, getting a tremendous performance from their bullpen. Arizona starter Preston Guilmet was pulled in the fifth inning trailing 3-2, but Perry and Jason Stoffel held the powerful Hurricane offense scoreless over the last 6 2/3 innings. Arizona won it on Jon Gaston’s three-run homer in the 11th.
Tonight’s pitching matchup is between Miami lefthander Eric Erickson (8-1, 4.13) and Arizona lefty David Coulon (8-3, 3.54). The Hurricanes just finished infield, and the first pitch is 15 minutes away. Check back for updates.
