THE GAME AT A GLANCE
Turning Point: It was anyone’s game until Ike Davis’ solo home run on a Scott Gorgen changeup broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning.
The Hero: Freshman righthander Mike Leake did a great job regrouping after a rough fourth inning, shutting out the Sun Devils for the next three frames. But Leake told ASU coach Pat Murphy that he was tired after the sixth inning, and the Sun Devils would have been in trouble if they had to lean on Leake any longer. That’s why closer Jason Jarvis is so valuable–he simply overpowered the Anteaters over the final two frames, rendering the game essentially over once Davis’ homer gave the Sun Devils the lead.
You May Not Have Noticed: Arizona State got little production from the middle of its order, as No. 2 hitter Brett Wallace, cleanup hitter Kiel Roling and No. 5 hitter Petey Paramore combined to go 0-for-11 with seven strikeouts. But Arizona State has plenty of weapons, and Davis, Matt Spencer (2-for-3, three-run homer) and Eric Sogard (3-for4) picked up the offense.
