Draft Day Three And Super Regionals Day Two Running Diary

It’s taken two days to get through 10 rounds. Today we’ll fly through 30 rounds in roughly the amount of time it took to complete rounds three through 10 yesterday. There are less recognizable names on day three, but there’s still plenty of reasons to pay attention. We’re conducting a running diary of what’s going on in the draft as well as checking in on the eight super regionals being played today.

12:09 p.m.: The draft won’t begin until 1 p.m., but the on-the-field action is getting going for what will be an insanely busy day of baseball.

Nathan left out a Jose Fernandez-Matt Harvey matchup at the big league level that would be must-see on many other days, but won’t even make an appearance on the TVs in the Baseball America office.

12:10 p.m.: One of the stories of the day will center around Kent Emmanuel’s first start since his controversial relief outing on Monday

12:15 p.m.: The early signs in Chapel Hill are not good for Emmanuel

12:16 p.m.: Our Nathan Rode isn’t the only interested observer in today’s Texas 5-A championship game.

12:35 p.m.: Emmanuel struggled in the first inning for North Carolina, but South Carolina’s defense struggled as well.

12:45 p.m.: Our Nathan Rode is keeping one ear on the MLB draft and two eyes on the best high school game in the country today.

12:49 p.m.: Florida State’s Luke Weaver has been impressive in the early going.

  12:50 p.m.: And all of a sudden it’s 4-2 South Carolina.

12:57 p.m.: It’s not been a good outing for the Astros’ third-round pick.

12:58 p.m.: Time to multi-task as it’s draft time as well.

1 p.m.: Emmanuel’s day is over quickly in Chapel Hill.

1:03 p.m. The Astros get day three going for the draft.

1:03 p.m.: Indiana takes the lead in its game.

1:04 p.m.: More about the first pick of day three.

1:06 p.m.: UCLA’s Adam Plutko’s longer than expected wait to be drafted is over.

1:07 p.m.: Fitt also really likes the Cubs’ 11th-round pick.

1:09 p.m.: We’ve seen three Puerto Rican players taken in the 11th round, but a notable name is still out there.

1:11 p.m.: We have action in the Mississippi State game as well.

1:11 p.m.: Some skinny on the Mariners’ 11th-round pick

1:14 p.m.: It took roughly 30 minutes to complete a round yesterday. Today’s 11th round took 11 minutes.

1:14 p.m.: And here’s a thumbnail on the Rangers’ 11th-round pick

1:15 p.m.: Conor Glassey is a big fan of the Yankees’ 11th-round pick

1:15 p.m.: The Braves got a projectable arm with their 11th-round pick

1:21 p.m.: And the thumbnail scouting reports move to the 12th round

1:25 p.m.: Remember when Conor Glassey mentioned that Johneshwy Fargas hadn’t been drafted. Fargas didn’t have to wait long after that.

1:27 p.m.: Now one of Aaron Fitt’s sleepers has been taken.

1:29 p.m.: Mississippi State still leads Virginia, but they aren’t helping themselves.

1:30 p.m.: Everyone in the Baseball America office cheers as the best name of the draft is taken.

1:32 p.m.: As we leave behind the euphoria of the Sicnarf Loopstok pick, the draft continues with a very notable name–Jordan Sheffield is taken by the Red Sox in the 13th round. Sheffield only lasted this long because he had an arm injury this spring.

1:41 p.m.: Is it nerves? We’ve seen a lot of shaky defense in super regional games.

1:42 p.m.: Want to hear an insane stat?

1:44 p.m.: The intersection of super regional action and the draft leads to moments like this.

1:59 p.m.: And on to 15th-round nuggets

  2:03 p.m.: Brotherly love.

2:04 p.m.: The Reds’ 15th-round pick could be interesting.

2:08 p.m.: So many games to keep track of

2:12 p.m.: Here’s what we mean by “so many games”.

2:14 p.m.: So many games, and they are all so close

2:16 p.m.: We’ll keep this updated all weekend.

2:17 p.m.: The lead swaps in Chapel Hill.

2:18 p.m.: And we have a tie in Tallahassee.

2:26 p.m.: Fittsy has a lot of favorites.

2:30 p.m.: We have a candidate for player of the day.

2:37 p.m.: And John Manuel’s fave gets into the action.

2:39 p.m.: It’s hard to explain how much we enjoy this day, even with 30 rounds to enter in our database.

2:43 p.m.: In Baseball America’s offices, the scouting reports keep rolling around as we get ready to move to round 20.

2:44 p.m.: The Gamecocks decision to bunt in the eighth inning didn’t pay off.

2:46 p.m.: But a bunt did pay off for Indiana

2:46 p.m.: We love our readers

2:49 p.m.: And we have a tie game in Chapel Hill

2:51 p.m.: And at the moment Chaz Frank was diving after that double.

2:53 p.m.: The early super regionals games could not be more competitive.

2:55 p.m.: One of the games we’ve been watching is over.

3:01 p.m.: Indiana pulling away against Florida State.

3:02 p.m.: South Carolina’s ugly defense continues.

3:12 p.m.: A sign of how signing bonus demands and the CBA rules ensure that the draft isn’t always about picking the best player first.

3:24 p.m.: And North Carolina wins their game against South Carolina on a walk-off single.

3:30 p.m.: We’ve talked about bad defense, so it’s only fair we highlight good defense.

3:35 p.m.: Is it wrong to have the draft during super regionals?

  3:39 p.m.: Talk about having a day.

3:40 p.m.: Scouts go to all ends to find potential players.

3:39 p.m.: More guys playing who are also getting drafted.

3:45 p.m.: A scouting advantage?

3:46 p.m.: Freshman Skye Bolt says this is the best team he’s ever played for

3:51 p.m.: Indiana’s error proved costly.

3:51 p.m.: There are still notable names being picked.

3:57 p.m.: And the draft takes a quick siesta

3:59 p.m.: We have several games coming down their final outs.

4:03 p.m.: Picking one star for Missisippi State today is hard.

4:17 p.m.: Our Aaron Fitt has gone in overload mode as too many games are going on.

4:18 p.m.: And the Indiana-Florida State game gets even closer in the bottom of the ninth.

4:22 p.m.: And Indiana has its first-ever super regional win.

4:24 p.m.: Missisippi State’s lineup continues to dominate today.

4:24 p.m.: As one set of games wraps up, another gets going.

4:51 p.m.: It’s amazing how many college teammates are being drafted by the same team.

4:55 p.m.: Tidbits in the 28th round.

5:07 p.m.: Most of the super regional games today have been nail-biters.

5:09 p.m.: The Red Sox have added another tough guy to sign.

5:10 p.m.: Guys fall to the 29th round for different reasons, but that doesn’t mean they can’t play, like Tanner Varva.

5:12 p.m.: The game gets tighter in Raleigh.

5:18 p.m.: It’s close in Nashville as well.

5:26 p.m: Carlos Rodon looks human in Raleigh.

5:47 p.m.: Rodon gets back to being locked in.

5:49 p.m.: Cardinals bullpen trying to hold off Vanderbilt.

5:54 p.m.: Intern Michael Lananna files his gamer on North Carolina’s 6-5 walk-off victory against South Carolina.

6:01 p.m. Vanderbilt creeps closer off hard-throwing Louisville closer Nick Burdi
