The Commodores swept a series against SEC West leader Alabama to keep pace with South Carolina atop the SEC East standings, heading into next weekend’s showdown between the Commodores and Gamecocks in Columbia. Vandy has won 10 straight.

2. VIRGINIA

Virginia took sole possession of first place in the ACC with a huge road series win against Georgia Tech, which entered the weekend tied with the Cavs atop the standings. Virginia ran its winning streak to 12 games before dropping Sunday’s finale. One key development for the Cavs was Jr. 2B Keith Werman’s breakout weekend: 7-for-11, 7 R, 6 RBI, raising his average to .248.

3. SOUTH CAROLINA

The Gamecocks allowed only one run in a three-game sweep of Tennessee, to remain tied with Vanderbilt atop the SEC standings heading into next weekend’s showdown between the two teams. South Carolina has allowed just 15 runs during its current nine-game winning streak (1.7 runs per game).

4. FLORIDA

The Gators won a road series at Mississippi State, but Friday’s loss dropped them a game behind South Carolina and Vanderbilt in the SEC East. Florida is just 6-5 in its last 11 games.

5. TEXAS A&M

After losing Friday’s opener, the Aggies bounced back to win a road series at Texas Tech for the first time since 1997 and remain even with Texas atop the Big 12 standings. The Aggies have begun conference play with four straight series wins for the first time ever, and three of them came on the road.

6. TEXAS

The Longhorns took two of three from Baylor to remain tied with Texas A&M atop the Big 12 standings. Texas has won seven of its last eight games since losing a road series at Oklahoma State.

7. NORTH CAROLINA

The Tar Heels won a road series against Florida State for the first time since 1995 and snapped Florida State’s 25-game winning streak on Sundays. The Tar Heels are tied with Georgia Tech for second place in the ACC’s Coastal Division, a game behind Virginia.

8. CAL STATE FULLERTON

9. OREGON STATE

The Beavers followed up their series win at Arizona with a sweep of Arizona State—their first sweep of the Sun Devils since 1966 and their first-ever in Corvallis.

10. ARIZONA STATE

Arizona State lost its first regular-season weekend series since April 9-11, 2010, a span of 12 series. The Sun Devils were also swept in a Pac-10 series for the first time since 1999. The sweep dropped Arizona State to fourth place in the Pac-10.

The Seminoles dropped a home series to North Carolina for the first time since 1995. FSU has lost series to ACC Coastal Division powers Virginia and UNC, throwing cold water on its national seed ambitions. Florida State retains a three-game lead over second-place Clemson in the Atlantic Division.

Fresno State split a four-game series at San Jose State in its WAC opener. A big development: Sr. 1B Jordan Ribera—last year’s national home run champ—hit his second long ball of the season Sunday, a tie-breaking three-run shot in the seventh.

14. OKLAHOMA

The Sooners dropped two of three on the road against Kansas State, and they are in fourth place in the Big 12, 2.5 games out of first. It was OU’s first series loss against K-State since 2001.

Georgia Tech lost its first weekend series of the season, but salvaged a win in Sunday’s finale against Virginia. The Yellow Jackets are tied with North Carolina for second place in the ACC’s Coastal Division, a game behind the Cavaliers.

16. CALIFORNIA

Cal dropped a road series against Arizona, losing a lead in the opener when the Wildcats scored three in the bottom of the ninth, but rallied to win the finale and avoid the sweep. So. Tony Renda had eight hits in the doubleheader Sunday as the Bears fell to third place in the Pac-10, a game back of UCLA.

17. STANFORD

After winning Friday’s opener, Stanford dropped the next two games at USC, which entered the weekend with an 11-18 record. It was Stanford’s first series loss to the Trojans since 2007.

Troy earned a big midweek win against Auburn followed by an series win against preseason Sun Belt Conference favorite Florida International. The Trojans lead the SBC by two games over Western Kentucky. So. 1B Logan Pierce had a monstrous week for the Trojans, collecting nine hits and 15 RBIs, thanks in large part to two grand slams.

The Bruins got complete games from Jr. RHPs Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer to win a road series at Washington State, but they blew a golden chance to sweep the series when Washington State rallied for three runs in the ninth Sunday. Still, UCLA is sitting pretty at 7-2 in the Pac-10.
