DURHAM, N.C.—Preseason No. 1 Florida enters the NCAA tournament back atop Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings after winning the Southeastern Conference tournament.
The Gators lost two series during the regular season but went 4-1 in Hoover, Ala., including a victory against Vanderbilt, to claim the SEC championship and to reclaim the No. 1 spot. Virginia, which won the Atlantic Coast Conference’s regular-season and tournament titles, ranks second, followed by Vanderbilt and last week’s No. 1, reigning national champion South Carolina.
Texas A&M and Rice both tied for their conference regular-season crowns and won their tournaments to move up the rankings. The Aggies swept the Big 12 tournament despite the loss to injury of ace John Stilson and moved up to No. 7, while Rice won the Conference USA event despite a loss and moved up seven spots to No. 9.
The other big mover this week was UCLA. The Bruins, ranked second in the preseason, won the Pacific-10 Conference title (regular season; the league has no tournament) by winning a series at Arizona State while Oregon State was swept by Civil War rival Oregon. The Bruins moved up to No. 17, a six-spot jump, while the Beavers fell nine spots to No. 15. Fellow Pac-10 team Stanford moved back into the rankings at No. 24 with a series win at California.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 29 and do not include ties.
