Vanderbilt enters the NCAA tournament atop Baseball America’s college Top 25 rankings. On the strength of a record-setting regular season in which they posted the best record in Southeastern Conference history, the Commodores close the regular season in the top spot despite a loss to Louisiana State in extra innings in the SEC tournament championship game.
The Tigers remain No. 2, followed by Big West Conference champion Cal State Fullerton and Pacific-12 Conference winner Oregon State. North Carolina, BA’s preseason No. 1 team and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament and moves up to No. 5.
Poor conference tournament showings knocked several teams down in the rankings, including South Carolina and Clemson. Conference tournament titles also vaulted teams up the rankings, as No. 19 Oklahoma (Big 12), No. 20 Rice (Conference USA) and No. 23 Florida Atlantic (Sun Belt) re-entered the Top 25. Austin Peay won the Ohio Valley to enter the rankings for the first time this season at No. 21.
Baseball America’s final Top 25 will come out at the conclusion of the College World Series.
