DURHAM, N.C.—After a one-week hiatus from the top spot in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings, Miami won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament for the first time and returns to the No. 1 perch.
The Hurricanes won games against Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and Virginia to take the ACC title for the first time since joining the league. ACC powers Florida State and North Carolina, last week’s No. 1, follow in the second and third spots ahead of Pacific-10 Conference champion Arizona State.
Louisiana State continued its meteoric rise up the rankings after sweeping through the Southeastern Conference tournament. LSU has won 20 consecutive games to move up to No. 5, with SEC regular-season champ Georgia falling to 10th after going 0-2 in the tournament. No. 23 Kentucky is the only other SEC team ranked, though the league likely will have more teams in the NCAA tournament field than any other conference.
Conference tournament winners made the biggest move up the rankings, such as San Diego (7), Coastal Carolina (17), Texas Christian (18) and Texas (19), with the Longhorns’ five-spot move the largest of the week. Arizona’s series win against Arizona State vaulted the Wildcats back into the rankings at No. 23, with St. John’s leaving the rankings after an 0-2 showing at the Big East tournament.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 25 and do not include ties.
