College Top 25: March 29

DURHAM, N.C.—Virginia won its third series against a ranked opponent this season, this time taking two of three from No. 16 Clemson, to extend its run at No. 1 in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings. The Cavaliers, the preseason No. 2 team, have held the No. 1 spot for five weeks.

Arizona State and UCLA both continued their perfect starts to the season and kept moving up in the rankings this week. The Sun Devils swept their first Pac-10 series of the year against California to improve to 23-0 and jump to No. 2. Meanwhile, the Bruins swept Cal Poly to reach 20-0 and the No. 6 ranking.

A trio of Southeastern Conference squads had big weekends in conference play and moved up. Mississippi headlines the list thanks to its series victory over then-No. 2 Florida, allowing the Rebels to make the biggest move of the week as they vaulted seven spots to No. 11. Just in front of them is Arkansas, which impressed by sweeping No. 25 Alabama and likewise made a big jump up to No. 10. Finally, South Carolina went on the road and took won its series at Auburn to move up to No. 12 this week.

Arizona was the only team to join the rankings this week. The Wildcats made their poll debut at No. 22 after a 4-1 week that included two midweek wins against New Mexico and then a weekend series win against conference foe Oregon. Arizona replaced Rice in the rankings after the Owls lost their weekend series to Memphis to drop their record to 13-12. This marks the first time Rice has fallen out of the Top 25 since the end of the 2000 season.
