College Top 25: April 9

DURHAM, N.C.—Florida State won its eighth consecutive series of the year, sweeping Georgia Tech to earn the No. 1 spot in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings. The Seminoles have won 14 of their first 15 Atlantic Coast Conference games.

Preseason No. 1 Florida lost its second straight series, this one at home to Louisiana State, to fall from first to No. 7 in this week’s tumultuous rankings. Texas A&M swept Oklahoma to move up to No. 2, followed closely by Kentucky, which won a Southeastern Conference series against then-No. 10 Mississippi. LSU jumped to fifth, South Carolina ranks 10th and Arkansas 11th to give the SEC five of the top 11 teams.

Baylor was the week’s big riser, stretching its win streak to 14 games to jump eight spots to No. 8. North Carolina and UCLA took the biggest tumbles. The Tar Heels were swept at Miami, scoring just three runs in the series, and fell 11 spots to No. 14, a spot behind the Hurricanes. The Bruins lost their second home series of the season, dropping two of three to Oregon to fall to No. 17, just behind the Ducks.

Two teams entered the rankings for the first time ever: No. 24 Sam Houston State and No. 25 New Mexico State. The Bearkats, under first-year head coach David Pierce, have won 12 straight games, while coach Rocky Ward’s Aggies have won 15 of 16.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of April 8 and do not include ties.
