College Top 25: April 18

DURHAM, N.C.—Virginia used a 5-0 week and Vanderbilt’s series loss at South Carolina to ascend to the top spot in the Baseball America Top 25 for the first time this year.

Virginia is the third team to be No. 1 this year, following Southeastern Conference powers Florida and Vanderbilt. The Cavaliers have a winning streak of five games and have won 17 of their last 18. South Carolina moved up to No. 2 after winning a series against the top-ranked team for the second time this year.

Oregon State entered the top five for the first time this season after sweeping Stanford on the road to extend its winning streak to nine games. Vanderbilt fell to No. 4 after its first series loss of the year, while Florida fell to No. 5, the lowest ranking of the year for the Gators.

While Oregon State was the biggest gainer, North Carolina had the biggest fall of teams remaining in the rankings. After reaching No. 7 last week, the Tar Heels slid to No. 14 after getting swept at North Carolina State.

Three new teams entered the rankings. Rice upset then-No. 5 Texas A&M on Tuesday and won its weekend series against Tulane. The Owls re-enter the rankings at No. 22 after a four-week absence. Gonzaga makes its season debut at No. 24 after winning a weekend series at Loyola Marymount to take sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference. Miami also re-entered the rankings after winning its series at Maryland. The Hurricanes, who were last in the rankings on February 21, are now 13-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Pac 10 and the ACC each have five teams ranked in the Baseball America Top 25, tied for the most of any conference.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of April 18 and do not include ties.
