USA Baseball swelled the ranks of college freshmen and sophomores invited to its national team trials, as 15 players accepted invitations to the trials to swell the total invitee list to 35.
The list includes one junior who already plans on serving his country. Army lefthander Nick Hill, who led the nation in ERA in 2005 during a 10-2, 1.21 season, accepted an invitation even though he was the Blue Jays’ 47th-round pick. Hill went 6-4, 3.34 in 2006.
The latest list also includes only one player currently in the College World Series in North Carolina catcher/first baseman Tim Federowicz. Four of the invited players hail from the Pacific-10 Conference, including two who are USA Baseball alumni. Arizona State first baseman/lefthander Ike Davis and California righthander Tyson Ross both were members of the 2004 junior national team, and Ross played for the junior team last summer as well, while Davis was on the ’03 youth national team. The other Pac-10 invitees are Washington State outfielder/pitcher Jared Prince and UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford, after only one Pac-10 player was among the first 20 players invited.
Team USA will hold trials on the road this year against real competition, as the 35-man roster will take on teams from the New England Collegiate League during a tour from June 24-July 1.
